Sterling Rallies

Sterling, under presaure for the last fortnight, rallied today with reports of steady buying from the United States and Europe.

After slipping to its lowest dollar rate for six monthg under heavy selling, the £ moved up fractionally when buying developed late on Wednesday In New York. It climbed 0.0016 cents today and closed at 2.7949 United States dollars.

For the first time this week, the Bank of England did not have to intervene with official support, according to dealers in London.
