Defence
Sir, —Your leading article, “Sacrifices for Defence,” asks the people of New Zealand (through its Government) to bring sacrifices for defence. There has been no indication whatever that there exists a threat to the shores of this country. The shortage of defence equipment is partly due to the fact that we are participating in a jungle war thousands of miles away from our shores. This war is not popular (because people cannot equate a war of intervention with defence). That is why it is difficult to raise ever-increasing finance. Yet the country, because of its policy of fighting wars in foreign countries, is denuded of defence equipment. We cannot even defend our own 12-mile fishing limit. If the Government decided to establish a policy of New Zealand defence forces for New Zealand only, then the people might be more willing to bring sacrifices.—Yours, etc., NOT FOREIGN WARS BUT N-Z. DEFENCE. March 10, 1966.
