Phillips Now Selector
The 1959-63 New Zealand full-back, Mr G. R. Phillips, will join two other former Kiwis, Messrs D. A. Barchard and B. E. Robertson, on the Auckland Rugby League selection panel this season.
New Zealand's first “Player of the Year” in 1961. Mr Phillips’ career was cruelly cut short when he suffered leg injuries in Australia in 1963. On his first tour to Australia in 1959, Australian critics described him as the best fullback in the world. Mr Phillips toured Britain in 1960 with the World Cup team, but he withdrew from the 1961 tour of Britain and France because of financial reasons.
Mr Barchard piayed nine tests for New Zealand between 1947 and 1952, toured Britain and France twice and Australia once.
