Steel To Race At Hornby
T'HERE is to be no respite for the New Zealand double sprint champion, A. G. Steel (Old Boys). Just a week after retaining both his titles in splendidly convincing fashion he will be matched against his perennial rival, D. W. Mackenzie (University), at the Hornby sports day, to be held at Denton Park today. Mackenzie was runner-up to Steel in the national 100 yards championship but did not contest the 220 yards. He is the reigning national quarter-mile champion. With Jamaica now in sight, both athletes will no doubt be hoping for some fast times to impress the selectors. D. Minards (Hornby), a national sprint finalist, will also be competing. Distance races will also be featured. Entries for these include such well known personalities as J. D. Macdonald (Riccarton), who was third
In the New Zealand steeplechase, R. J. Stevens (Olympic), the Canterbury six, 10 and 15 miles record-holder, T. Preece (Olympic), G. Clarke (Olympic), R. Allen (Old Boys) and W. Slinn (University).
The programme, organised by the Hornby Amateur Athletic and Cash Cycling Clubs,
will feature the New Zealand cash cycling championships and wood chopping contests, as well as athletics.
