Decimal Prices
Sir, — A. director of the Australian Cash Register Company warned New Zealand retailers at their annual conference not to delay legitimate price increases until the change to decimal currency occurred. This presupposes that the retailers were somewhat dilatory in adjusting what the director euphemistically alluded to as “legitimate” price rises. It is apparent that the retailers’ concept of “legitimacy” is exceptionally elastic. Anyway, the director is somewhat late with his advice, as the extortion over the counter still persistently rises. This realisation does not need confirmation by cash registers.—Yours, etc., D. H. C. March 10, 1966.
