Hire Purchase Sales
The value of television sets sold on hire purchase by surveyed businesses fell 30.6 per cent in the last quarter of 1965, compared with the same quarter of the previous year, according to a survey of trading released by the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). The approximate number of sets represented in the sales fell by 19 per cent.
The average amount covered by a hire purchase agreement in the latest quarter was £lO4. The value of goods sold during the December quarter on hire purchase was £14.6m. a rise of £2.lm on the £12.5m recorded for the same quarter of 1964. The survey includes both merchandising firms and selected finance corporations, and is estimated to cover about 58 per cent of the total hire purchase business in New Zealand as recorded in the 1963 census of distribution > In the latest December quarter, sales of plant and machinery on hire purchase ;at £3m were £0 9m. or 42.6 ner cent higher than in the September quarter, and £l.lm or 54 5 r>er cent higher than lin the December quarter of 1964 Motor vehicles sold on hire purchase increased by £o.2m, or 3.3 per cent in the latest quarter to £6.9m. Other household and personal goods increased by £o.9m to £4.2m in the December quarter.
