CATCHMENT PROPOSAL
Three-County Meeting
Waipara, Cheviot and Amur! county council members will meet the chairman (Mr A. E. Clark) and deputy-chairman (Mr J. R. Hair) of the Soil Conservation Council today to discuss a proposal that the three counties come into the North Canterbury Catchment Board's district.
Last year, the Local Government Commission suggested that the north Canterbury counties, and those on Banks Peninsula, should come into the board’s area. The commission subsequently withdrew its proposals for Banks Peninsula “in view of opposition," but discussions continued among the other counties. Messrs Clark and Hair on Wednesday discussed the North Canterbury proposition with members of the Catchment Board, Mr Clark saying later that he and Mr Hair would put the position to the three councils, for them to have further discussions at their own meetings. None of the councils had committed itself to coming into the board’s area, said Mr Clark. It was hoped that Friday’s meeting would clarify points at issue.
