£lOOO Pledged For Appeal
A decision to pledge £lOOO to the combined appeal for church halls of residence within the University of Canterbury, was the most important business item in 1965 of the Canterbury branch of the Federation of University Women, says its annual report
The money will be payable over five years, coming from the branch’s hiring service of hoods and gowns for graduation ceremonies and school prize-givings. “For many years this hiring service has provided the branch with extra income, which has covered special projects,” says the report from the president (Mrs R. Burns). “During the last two years, the great increase in student numbers has been reflected by a commensurate increase in revenue from this service and the committee fell that some of this money should be used to support the halls of residence appeal.” The source of this income was the students themselves, who provided the clientele for the hiring service, she said.
“Our donation would materially assist this appeal for halls of residence for for students. It would also provide tangible evidence of our sincere and continued interest in the urgent need for more student accommodation.” said Mrs Burns. The branch now had 167 financial members, and was represented on the National Council of Women and the Pan-Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association. Seven- members of the branch attended the International Federation of University Women's conference in Brisbane last year. About 50 overseas members of the international organisation .were entertained in Christchurch before or after the conference.
