“ADVENTURE SCHOOLS”
Youth Council
To Help
The Canterbury Regional Youth Council agreed this week to sponsor courses for directors of “adventure schools” and secondary school pupils’ social dubs. The Department of Internal Affairs youth activities officer (Mr L. J. Coughlan) said that the Canterbury Youth Clubs’ Association wanted to recruit directors for the Friday night dubs, and include other activities besides dandng. “They feel a course on counselling, group dynamics and programming would be helpful,” he said. “It would be a short course, but a good one.” Mr Coughlan said he had also been approached by Mr F. Carter, physical education instructor at Christchurch Teachers’ College, who wished to find people prepared to accept leadership of adventure schools. A course could be organised to train these people in specialised activities such as rock-climbing, river-crossing, survival in the bush, compassreading, hunting, tramping and camp cooking. “Someone has to sponsor these things, and I think it should be us,” Mr Coughlan said. The meeting agreed in principle to sponsor both courses.
