CHANGES IN NURSING
Nurses who graduated from the Christchurch School of Nursing last evening, were called upon to recognise the stimulation of a changing situation in their profession.
They had to be positive about the increasing demands which were now being made on them. They had to think constructively about suddenly altered situations and not cling desperately to traditional methods because these were the ones they had always used, said the matron-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mrs M. Chambers). Nurses were in a unique position as part of a team to help care for patients, she told the graduates. Patients today not only needed more skilled techniques; they had the right to
sympathy and understanding from their nurses. Patients were being encouraged to keep their independence and helping them to do this called for special skills on the part of the nurses, who must be prepared to meet changes and help inaugurate them. Mrs Chambers said.
Medals and prizes were presented by Miss M. Mullan to the following graduates: Nurses H. L. Anderson, G. D. Atkinson, H. M. Baineaves, G. N. Biggs, J. R. Blair, G. L. Boyce, M. L. Boyd-Wilson,
NURSE R. S. CALDER, who was awarded the Florence Nightingale medal at the Christchurch School of Nursing graduation ceremony last evening. Nurse Calder also won the Wendy Watson Memorial Prize for obstetrical nursing, the Hugh Acland Memorial Prize for surgical nursing and the Fenwick Memorial Prize for medical nursing.
