Attempting Double
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Broadway, Wellington, women’s softball team will attempt today and tomorrow to give the club a unique “double” victory in the men’s and women’s New Zealand inter-club series. The Broadway men’s team won the John Lennon trophy —symbol of men’s inter-club supremacy—last week. Today, at Hataitai Park, Wellington, Broadway is one of six teams which will compete for the women’s trophy, the Dustin Cup. If the Broadway women win, it will be the first time
in the same season that the one club has taken both titles. The other finalists are Eden-Roskill (Auckland), Meville (Waikato), Saints (Hawke’s Bay), and Monowai and Avon (Canterbury). Last year's winner, Y.W.C.A. (Hutt Valley), was eliminated in a zone play-off. The favourite is the experienced Monowai side, whose pitcher, B. Makinson, has been a reliable member of New Zealand teams on many occasions. Her catcher, N. Beale, has partnered her in Canterbury and South Island teams for several years.
