FIGHT IN DOUBT
Terrell Not Satisfied (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ATLANTIC CITY. Ernie Terrell said yesterday he will not fight Cassius Clay for the world heavy-weight boxing championship in Toronto on March 29 under terms of the new contract from Maple Leaf Gardens, Associated Press reported. One of the terms Terrell objected to stipulated that the winner of the fight must defend the title against George Chuvalo, of Toronto, at the Gardens two months later. In Toronto, Mr Harold Ballard, executive vice-president of the Gardens, said the condition would have to be met or the Clay-Terrell fight would not be held at the Gardens. A prominent Toronto sportsman, Mr Con Smythe, yesterday resigned from the board of the Maple Leaf Gardens in protest against plans to hold the fight there. In a telegram from his winter home in Florida, Mr Smythe said he resigned because the Gardens management had “put cash ahead of class.” “A fight that isn’t good enough for Chicago or Montreal certainly isn’t good enough for Maple Leaf Gardens,” Mr Smythe said. “The Gardens was built for many things, but not garbage disposal.”
Badminton Titles.—The New Zealand badminton championships will be held in Rotorua from August 30 to September 4.
