France Gives Position
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, March 10.
President de Gaulle made it clear yesterday he intended to keep France in the North Atlantic Alliance at the same time as he went his own way on the military reforms of the organisation he insists are necessary. One of these reforms is for France—which houses NATO headquaters—to have control of foreign troops and bases on her soil.
After a Cabinet meeting yesterday the President’s spokesman told reporters that France would not use the leaving clause in the North Atlantic Treaty. This allows any member country, after April, 1969, to give one year’s notice that it is pulling out.
Refit for Liner.—ln a strong wind and heavy rain the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth was manoeuvred out of the Firth of Clyde dry dock at Greenock yesterday after a £1,250,000 refit.—London, Mar. 10.
