AROUND THE GREENS

Six greens, Christchurch W.M.C., Woodston WH.C, Riccarton WM.C. and Linwood, Woodston and Sydenham, will be used for the Sooth Island working men’s club on Saturday. The headquarters for the tournament will be the Christchurch W.M.C. The official opening will be held at 8.45 p.m. when the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), Mr H. J. Walker, member of Parliament for St. Albans, and Mr N. E. Kirk, Leader of the Opposition, will be present. One hundred and six teams representing 18 clubs from Canterbury, West Coast and Otago have entered for the tournament. Champions’ Titles The champion of champion fours competition of the Christchurch Centre will be continued on Saturday next when the following dub representatives will play on the Cashmere green at 8.30 am:— R.S.A., Opawa, Dallingtan, Hampstead, Burwood, Beckenham, Akaroa, Oxford, Mount Pleasant Rangiora, Edgeware and Belfast. Play on Beckenham green at 8.30 a.m.—Barrington, Sydenham, Amberley and Burnside. The champion colts’ competition will start on Saturday on the Morrison avenue green when the following representatives will play at 9 a.m.:— Burnham Camp, Woolston, Riccarton W.M.C., Lincoln, United, Opawa, Imperial, New Brighton, Kaiapoi WM.C., Burnside, Woolston WM.C., Lyttelton Watersiders, Belfast, St. Martins, Cashmere, Sumner, Rangiora, Allenton, R.S.A., Mona Vale, Canterbury, Fendalton, Papanui, Sydenham, Dallington, Dunsandel, Morrison Avenue, Christchurch W.M.C., South Brighton, Leeston, Edgeware, Riccarton Racecourse. Play at 10.5 am.:—Beckenham, Barrington, Mount Pleasant, Shirley, Amberley,

Akaroa, Hornby, Elmwood, Spreydon, Kaiapoi, Burwood and Rakaia. Beckenham The club’s jubilee fours was won by D. Ayson’s team, which won all of its matches. The team was: Ayson, R. Ogier, B. O’Connell and C. Skerton. The president (Mr W. Craig) presented miniature cups to the winners. R.S.A. T. Stringer won the dub’s colts’ singles championships for the second year in succession. The same feat was performed by the winner of the championship singles, F. Hoy, who beat N. McNab derisively 20-8. Winners of other championships were, pairs: H. Hirst and W. Ditfort; fours: A. Archer, J. Mulligan, P. Edgington and N. McNab. The Canterbury Diggers’ tournament drew a record entry of 150 fours. The final rounds were played at the R.S.A. green and the winners were a Shirley four, D. Taylor, L. Clarke, C. V. McNatty and E. Williamson, who beat C. Sinclair’s United four in the final. R. Morrison (Linwood) was third. Dailington D. Stuart, who has been having quite a successful season, won the dub’s singles championship when he beat G. Goodall in the final, 22-17. The game was even until the tenth end when Stuart led 11-10, but thereafter he scored freely to win by five points. The intermediate singles title was won by H. Williams, who beat H. Lack. In the challenge shield match against South Brighton. Dailington retained the trophy with 30 points to 286. Opawa K. G. Murray took two of the dub’s championships when he won the singles title, which he also won last year, and then took the pairs title

with F. French, with whom he played in the national tournament. Murray did not lose a life in either event. The fours was won by C. Rowe’s team, of J. Stoddart, W. Whitehead, and J. Dawson. They beat L Sellers’ team in the final. D. McNeil (Rangiona) won the dub’s all-day tournament held last week. The last Thursday tournament will be held on March 24, and there is still room for two more entries. Sumner Sumner regained the Reynolds Shield when it defeated Redcliffs in the homeandaiway series by 139 points to 138 at Sumner. The first round at Reddiffs was won by Sumner, 189-161, giving it a total winning margin of 29 points. Results, with Sumner names first are:—La Roche 24, Anderson 12; Idle 27, Gormack 27; Tuck 14, McDougall 34; Church 18, Page 17; Hudd 21, Prangnell 14; Squirrel! 18, Manson 16; Rudd 17, Bloom 18. In the dub’s colts’ championship, J. R. Hannah beat A. C. Cliibborn (last year’s winner) in the final. Linwood The dub’s Champion singles are now down to the semifinals. In the quarter-finals, R. G. Morrison beat F. Burgess; C. Richards beat A. Black; F. Burgess beat C. Richards, and R. G. Morrison beat G. Taylor.

The draw for the next round is Morrison v. Richards and Morrison v. Burgess.

Snake Lover.—Police charged a biology student, Guido Frola, with failing to keep guard on a dangerous reptile after Frola’s four-foot snake slithered into adjoining apartment and frightened a woman. The judge acquitted Frola, however, after experts testified the reptile was a harmless blacksnake and an excellent rat killer.
