Transport Licence Extension Allowed
An application by logging contractors to extend their goods service licence to carry posts from Alford Forest to Christchurch was granted, subject to special conditions, by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood), yesterday. The applicants were Philip Stanley Southerwood and Robin James Pearce, Briggs road (Mr P. V. Quigley). The applicants were granted transfer of a goods service licence from Samuel Leslie Dodge, of Kaiapoi. with a change of domicile from Kaiapoi to Christchurch. The special condition of the extension was that the applicants could carry one load of logs from Alford Forest to Christchurch on Saturdays after the remainder of the posts had been loaded on to rail at Methven during the period of the contract. Mr Southerwood said they could sell the posts in Christ-
church, but the buyers were not willing to unload the posts when they arrived at the railway yards. He and his partner wished to make it economical to come to Christchurch on Saturdays to unload the rail waggons by loading their own truck. Mr F. Daley, for the Railways Department, offered no opposition to the extension. Midland Motorway Services, Ltd. (Mr B. J. Drake), was granted an amendment to its passenger service licence for sightseeing trips in the northern suburbs to allow for changes that had taken place in the area since the licence was granted.
Canal Tolls.— Revenue from the Suez Canal is now running at the rate of about £9O million a year, according to the Canal Authority. Since the canal was nationalised tolls have increased by 250 per cent
