ADDINGTON MARKET Older Ewes Again In Strong Demand
Adult ewes continued to meet a very sound sale at the Addington store sheep market yesterday. A large gallery of buyers competed keenly for any type of ewe capable of a year’s production or more.
Values were considered fully firm on last week, but in the Romney ewe section, there were some sales at higher values, where quality was comparable.
Two-tooth met am erratic sale, and quality—apart from the top sheep—was mixed. The best quality two-tooths appeared to be 5s or so cheaper than last sale, and in some cases it was a great deal more.
Medium - quality Romneys were generally firm, but finewoolled two-tooths were generally back on last sale, although quality here was very plain. Store lambs were yarded in much larger numbers, and values, until mid-way through the sale, were fully 2s up on last week. By the close of the sale, they were firm. The yarding totalled 18,891 head compared with 19,270 last sale. It was made up of 3151 ewe lambs (1471 last week), 4820 wether lambs (3548), 3249 two-tooth (4358), 7529 adult ewes (9893), and 117 wethers (none). Store Lambs The store lamb sale started off on a strong note, with values fully 2s a head up on last week, but half way through the sale, values began to slacken, and by the end, were about firm on last week’s closing rates.
Although a good 20 per cent larger than last week, the entry was mainly of average quality, with only a small proportion of Romneys. The yarding included a line of 600 Merino wether lambs, and these met a good sale for Addington, fetching from 42s to 50s.
The best of the fine-woolled wether lambs sold to 57s 6d, with medium from 45s to 48s 6d, and small down to 355. The best of the shorn fine-woolled lambs sold to 54s 6d.
Romney wether lambs sold mainly from 52s to 56s 6d for medium to good, with the majority of the shorn Romneys selling from 51s to 56s 6d. The best of the fine-woolled ewe lambs so*ld to 665, while Romney ewe lambs reached a peak of 87s for the second time this season. The best of them sold from 67s to 74s 6d with one sale at 87s, and medium from 58s to 655.

Two-Tooths Quality in the two-tooth ewe section was fairly mixed, and the sale itself, followed an irregular pattern. Buying strength, especially in the early stages was weak, the gallery following the sale being one of the smallest of the season. There were times when values were firm on those of last week, but the fine-woolled two-tooths were generally back 5s a head, and in some cases more. Romney two-tooths sold fairly consistently, but the top pens were not up to last week’s values by upwards of 5s a head. Top price for Romneys was £5 10s for the best of a Hine from M. G. Robinson (Waiau). Over the whole sale only 16 pens of Romneys realised £5 or better. Best Romneys sold from £5 Is to the top price, average to good, 91s to 99 s, and others down to 87s. Adult Ewes A large gallery again followed the adult ewe sale, and values were firm on last week, although the market did not have quite the same buoyancy. There were not as many representative lines of ewes forward this week. Four and five year-old drafts were, in fact, scarce. With tupping time approaching, al! ewes met a ready sale, as there appears to be still a large number of farmers who have yet to complete their purchases of flock replacements. The Romneys on offer met a brisk sale, anything with a row of teeth attracting keen competition. Top price was 86s for the best of a line of four and five-year-oldis from the Price Partnership, Poranui, Best Romney ewes sold from 65s to 71s, with odd sates to 795: good sound-mouthed ewes sold from 59s to 635, with other Romney ewes down to 50s.
