Fine Wool Firm At Invercargill
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. March 9. Prices for finer wools remained firm, but there was some irregularity among lower offerings, when the first day of the fifth Invercargill wool sale opened today.
Compared with prices at the recent Dunedin sale, today’s were firm for finer wool, irregular for coarser and barely holding for oddments. Better picked lots of good length lambs’ wool were sold in sellers’ favour, others being erratic, with oddments generally unchanged. Two catalogues totalling 20,356 bales, were offered. Bidding was 'widespread and keen, only 28 of the opening catalogue of 705 lots being passed. Main buying came from the Continent, with Japanese and American competition, particularly on down-cross sorts. Bradford was relatively quiet. The clip opened well for colour, but most wools showed the effects of adverse weather, fleece wools being extremely tender in the staple and oddments were discoloured. Many of the lines of lambs’ wool showed evidence of poor preparation. A total of 39,222 bales is being offered at the two-day sale, which ends on Friday.
