France Not Supported (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyrights PARIS, Mar. 9. France failed yesterday to rally a majority behind its claim that the American dollar and the British pound cease to be the leading free world currencies, United Press International reported. Realisation of the failure came at the end of a two-day meeting of deputy finance ministers of the “Paris club" of 10 leading financial powers, who form the mainstay of the world monetary system. Informed sources said the deputy ministers taking part in the closed-door talks turned a cold shoulder to France’s renewed demands that the world should. return to the gold standard of 35 years ago.
Since pre-depression days the dollar and pound have been considered as good as gold in the world trade. France challenges the view on the ground that both the dollar and pound are steadily weakening on the world market.
Tokyo Crash.—The head of 8.0.A.C., Sir Giles Guthrie, said today it might take several weeks to uncover the cause of Saturday’s Boeing 707 air disaster on the slopes of Mount Fuji.—Tokyo, March 9.
