Importance Of Welding Industry To N.Z.
“We, as a nation believe in' rising living standards and full employment," said Mr M. A Connelly. M.P. for Riccarton, when he opened the 28th annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Welding. “With the benefit of findings from science and research, industry can provide larger quantities of high quality goods at lower prices.”
Mr Connelly said that such; conferences made it possible for the members of an industry to keep abreast of modern developments. “As a trading nation,” said Mr Connelly, “we face the challenge of less developed nations which must export to pay for the development they need. “Welding affects all indus-
tries. It is a concern of architects, builders, engineers, and farmers. None of them can afford to ignore the progress in welding, or be ignorant of the services the welding industry offers." The conference was welcomed by Mr O. C. Mitchell, chairman of the Waimairi County Council. He said that . his own experience as a I builder had shown him that i welding was one of the most ! important industries in New [Zealand. : The conference, which will ; close on Friday, is being held in Riccarton House.
Displays showing some applications of welding have been arranged in the windows of the Canterbury Savings Bank, and in the Riccarton shopping mall.
