Lunch-time Concert

Regular Thursday lunchtime concerts at the University of Canterbury resume today when the John Ritchie String Orchestra plays music by John Ireland and the New Zealand composer. Larry Pruden.

Ireland's “Concertino Pastorale” is an extended three movement work, typical of the composer for its lyrical appeal and warm-hearted humanity. It was written for the Boyd Neel Orchestra and was played by this group many times during the 19405. “Dances of Brittany.” a work of immediate attractiveness is a set of colourfully orchestrated Brittany dance tunes. Characteristic of Pruden's style is the rich harmonic texture and “off-beat” rhythms. As the lunch-time concerts enter their 22nd year, it is estimated that nearly 600 concerts have been given. Staff, students and members of the public attend. There is no charge.
