improvement By Mary Poppins

“The Press” Special Service

WELLINGTON. A brilliant three furlongs by the two-year-old Mary Poppins was the best gallop in a light morning’s work at Trentham yesterday. On the course proper, where the horses were galloping a little beyond the true distance, Mary Poppins (Willetts) ran three furlongs in 34sec. She failed to run on on Saturday, but is obviously improved. Creolian (Willetts) ran a first-class mile in Imin 42 2-5 sec, picking up Flying Gib (N. Riordan) at the five furlongs. They came from the half-mile in 50sec, the last three in 37 l-ssec. Creolian has won an open handicap at the spring and summer meetings and on the way he worked yesterday and on his finishing run in the Thompson Handicap on Saturday he should go close to making it a treble for the season. Jet Girl (Riordan) covered an easy mile in Imin 50sec, the last three furlongs in 40) sec. Terrific (Riordan) went fast early over a mile, but steadied down near the finish, where.

however, he was still galloping strongly. He ran the full distance in Imin 46sec. the last three furlongs in 38sec. He should have little trouble winning the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes. Vice Consul (Woolhouse) ran half a mile in 52)sec and Mangaroa (Willetts) covered half a mile, the last three furlongs in 37sec. Mangaroa’s gallop was on the plough. De Filou (Riordan) the likely favourite for the Champion Hack Handicap, covered six furlongs, the early stages easily, and the last three furlongs deceptively in 38}sec. Something Special (Riordan) ran a mile in Imin 43 2-ssec, the last half in 50 4-ssec. He is improving. Royal Chase (W. Holmes) went quietly over three furlongs in 38lsec and Plush (Willetts) surprised by running half a mile easily in 50 3-ssec. Balleta (Tooman), a candidate for the New Zealand St. Leger, was at the track, but was not worked fast. Others who were not required to gallop included Palisade, Warfare, Captain’s Command, Grand Filou, Rohe Potae and Boodle.
