SAIL AWAY FIT FOR TRENTHAM
“The Press** Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Sail Away’s appearance at the training track yesterday suggests the gelding will be a hard horse to beat in his attempt on a double success in the President’s Handicap at Trentham. Apart from superficial cuts and bruises he came through his first day outing well. He was impressive in a steady semi-final trial on the No. 1 grass at Woodville. His stabiemate, Dark Smudge, is ready to test Terrific in the St. Leger Stakes, but Truegent, another acceptor for the race, is not expected to line up. Dark Smudge furthered his St. Leger preparation with a gallop over about a mile with Gayemana. Neither horse was allowed to go al top speed and they passed the line together after clocking Imin 32sec for their last seven furlongs, the final three in 39 l-ssec. Both would prefer fast footing at the week-end.
Baloo, the pre-post favourite for the Leopard Gold Cup at Hastings, worked keenly over a mile, running his last seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec. He was joined near the six by Royal And Ancient, the stablemates staying close over their last half in 53 2-5 sec, the final three in 39 2-ssec.
