FASHION TO CATCH THE MOOD

What might suit Paddy’s market might not be appropriate for Sydney’s Easter meeting. For the 50,000 New Zealanders who visit Australia every year there is a right garment for the right occasion.

Garments to catch the right mood and delight the imagination were shown to the Christchurch audience in the Australia Week midday fashion parade yesterday. Compered by Miss Gwen Gosper, a Quantas promotion officer from Sydney, the collection of suits, coats and evening wear was paraded by Christchurch models in the Horticultural Hall. Colours were stark and exciting with reds, blacks, aquas, greens and black and white. Wool was unchallenged as the popular fabric. Winter coats were high buttoned with luxury fur collars or collars of the same material Slightly flared, their

design favoured the double breasted look. Suits were teamed in a slim-fitting short-sleeved frock and matching hip-length jacket. Sportswear, or clothes for relaxed living, described as the uniform of the Australian women, were in bright colours and slim-fitting styles. Easter Outfit The model dressed for Sydney’s Easter meeting wore a striking all-black outfit. From the black pill box to “the touch of mink” at her throat and the smart but comfortable ankle-strap shoes (a must for losing money without losing patience) the outfit was sheer elegance. For shopping in Paddy’s market, what could be more devil-may-care than a short short, shirt-styled frock in red checks with matching stockings. To translate the russet beauty of Australia’s

centre into a fashion garment, there was a russet doublebreasted coat, flared from the waist with a matching pillbox. Formal fashions to capture the spirit of Australia’s night life were slim and elegant. One formal full-length black dress with deep tucks was made doubly appealing when the last few rows of tucks were removed to convert it into a short: cocktail frock. Full-length hostess skirts teamed with matching tops paved the way for a wardrobe which may include several evening outfits for the woman who is more fashion-wise and ingenious than rich.
