Brisk Enrolments For W.E.A. Programme
Brisk enrolments are reported for the autumn programme of the Workers’ Educational Association in Christchurch, courses in which will begin next Monday. An autumn programme is an innovation in the W.E.A.’s organisation—this year’s activities having been divided into autumn, winter and spring programmes for the first time.
The autumn programme comprises about 40 courses, some of which are filling rapidly. There was the usual demand for language courses, said the tutorial secretary, Mr N. A. Parsloe, yesterday. These were being conducted in French, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Maori—all at elementary and intermediate level. Courses on “Soviet Russia and its Influences on Southeast Asia” and “The Changing Place of Women in New Zealand Society” reflected the tradition of the WJE.A., said Mr Parsloe. “These courses aim at giving people an informal opinion on these matters,” he said. The lecturer in the former course will be Dr. L. J. Symons, of the University of Canterbury, and the lecturers in the latter course—advertised as appealing to both men and women—Enid Hardie and Elsie Locke. Other courses reported as filling well are in beginners’ photography, motor mechanics for car drivers, and one about the collections in the Canterbury Museum, entitled “Know Your Muaaum.’*
The W.E.A.’s detailed syllabus of courses has been printed, and is now available at the organisation’s office in Gloucester street. The advance note on the winter programme, which appears in the syllabus, lists courses in astronavigation, colour photography, creative writing (at Kaiapoi), creative music-making, language and the writer, the Maori in the past, sight-singing and rudiments of music, and a course on Thomas Hobbes.
