LAST RIDE OF DALTON

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand professional cyclist, Warwick Dalton, aged 29, officially announced his retirement after finishing fourth in the Melbourne six-day race, the “Australian” reported yesterday. Known as cycling’s “iron man” after his 1962 Launton six-day race with the Italian, Guiseppe Ogna, when he had a fractured skull and other injuries, Dalton represented New Zealand at two Olympic Games and one Commonwealth Games. He finished sixth, in the 1956 Olympic 1000 metres time triai and was a member of the team beaten in the 5000 metres pursuit quarterfinal by the eventual recordbreaking winner, Italy.

After taking the bronze medals in both the 4000 metres individual pursuit and 1000 metres time trial at the Cardiff Commonwealth Games in 1958, Dalton finished fourth in the world pursuit championship.
