INITIATION COURSE
State Service Cadets A two-day initiation course for young people who have recently joined the Public Service will begin in Christchurch today. The purpose of the course (will be to explain the broad workings of the Government !the State services and their relations with the public gen- : erally. The course will also outline j the need for a public service! and the connexions between I 'the 36 Government depart'! ments. The course will he conducted by the State Services Commission for 22 cadets from 12 Government departments which are not large enough to have staff training officers of their own. The course beginning today will be followed by a oneday course on Friday for 19 girls who were engaged at the beginning of the year as typists and shorthand-typists by various departments. An officer of the State Services Commission said yesterday that the initiation courses were designed to show new employees how they fitted into the complex pattern of the Government service and the opportunities open to them. Coming into a service (which employed more than ,40.000 people could be confusing, he said. During the year five other courses for employees at al) (levels will be conducted some in residence at the Templeton Training wing and others at the State Services Commission office in the Government Life Building.
