THE OPENING OF APIA’S NEW £800,000 DEEP-WATER WHARF was a gala occasion and the berthing of the first ship, the Matua, was watched by several thousand people. Members of the Samoan brass band, which was in attendance, are shown, with the Matua berthed at the new wharf in the background. Before the wharf was opened all cargo at Apia was worked by lighter.
