Frost, Turner Outclass All Yachting Opponents

The final Estuary Pennants series was sailed on Sunday in a moderate to fresh north-easterly breeze which spreadeagled the fleet, causing many capsizes, retirements and gear failures.

All but one of the winning margins were conclusive but the highlight was the incredible and excitifig performance of E. R. Frost and D. Turner in the champion catamaran, Scorpion. From the start, Scorpion went away like a jet-powered motor boat. Using two trapezes, Frost and Turner flew away from the fleet, lapping one of the A class catamarans and finishing some nine minutes ahead of the next boat and also the Flying Dutchman, Gazelle (G. S. Mander and D. Nixon). The small P class had a close and interesting race, with a battle royal to the finishing line. A. Ineson, sailing Flee, had a good lead at one stage but fell by the way, as did W. Tomlinson, on the last beat to the finish. Backmarkers Succeed Conditions on Saturda}’ were variable with a touch of both southerly and easterly for the Association events on the Estuary and for club racing on the 1 Harbour. i At Lyttelton, the early lead'ers in the club race were caught in a windshift and the backmarkers came through to take line honours. The handicap results were the same as the finishing places. The Buxton Cup was won by

J. Masson, who stepped out of P class only weeks ago, but the highlight of this race was the extremely close finish, the first dozen boats crossing the line within one minute and a half. So close were the major place-getters that officials were unable to time them in. The P class race was dominated by the young Christchurch club skippers, P. Lester, N. England and P. Collingwood, with Mount Pleasant’s B Trethcway amongst them to finish third. Results: SATURDAY Canterbury Y.A. Open Clasis «Buxton Cup, 76 started). —Finessa, Finn (J. Masson.
