PAPER AND COMMUNITY

Guest Staff In Action (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, March 6. The Bishop of Nelson (the Rt. Rev. P. E. Sutton) was in his shirt-sleeves at 8.30 a.m. yesterday . . . writing the leading article for the centennial issue of the “Nelson Evening Mail,” the first daily newspaper of the province. To celebrate the 100 years continuous publication, members of the community produced yesterday’s issue of the paper and took over the executive roiies of the staff. They reported for work at 8 o’clock and at 9 a.m. held a conference to decide what would be the featured articles and pictures in the issue. A four-colour 16-page centennial supplement was published with the paper. Guest staff showed an instinctive sense of news value. The regular editor, Mr G. D. Spencer said the guest editor, the news editor, and the illustrations editor, picked front page material much as he and his staff would. There was little bias or parochial outlook in their assessment of news. They wanted the best newspaper they could produce and one story for the front page was rewritten to suit the news editor’s appreciation of its news value.
