Showing Sympathy By Gifts To Charity
A plan to encourage people to make donations to charitable organisations instead of sending floral tributes on the death of friends and relations, is being introduced in Christchurch by the Anglican Social Services Council. “This alternative manner of showing sympathy has a lot to commend it,” said the manager of the Social Services Council, Mr G. M. Morgan. “Flowers soon become withered and are burnt, and often the bereaved are unable to inspect the flowers and see only the card attached. With this alternative plan the small gift is used for promoting welfare work, and is therefore a more lasting tribute.” It was quite a recognised practice overseas, and a num-
>er of such donations were ilready received by the Socal Service Council in Christ>hurch each month, Mr Morgan added. The Social Services Council s at present preparing cards 'or distribution in parishes to explain the plan, and another :et containing a message of ympathy which would be imnediately mailed by the Coun!il to a bereaved person on nstructions from anyone desiring to show sympathy in his manner instead of forwarding floral tributes.
