Country Teams Two Wins Against Town Players

Country teams performed creditably on the annual Town-Country tennis day at Wilding Park on Saturday. They have occasionally won four of the six matches; this time they won two but they took the Town teams close in other contests, one of which had to be decided on sets.

On Friday it was thought the fixture might have to be cancelled. Then it was decided the senior contests would be played on the hard courts and the junior ones would not be played. In the event, after the mixed doubles in the morning, the grass had dried enough to allow the rest of the matches to be played on it. Country’s two wins were scored by Mid-Canterbury and Hurunui when they beat their Town opponents, 14 matches to 10 and 16 matches to 8 respectively. In the other fixtures. Town beat North Canterbury, 13 matches to 11, Malvern, 13 matches to 11, Banks Peninsula, 20 matches to 4 and Ellesmere, 20 sets to 18 when each was equal on matches. Davidson In Form A number of leading Town players, including R. McCutcheon, J. Mitchell, J. Martin and W. Thom, were not participating. This was unfortunate because a player like G. A. Davidson, of Mid-Canterbury, is still up to the best standard in the province. Once top in Canterbury, Davidson now lives in Ashburton where he recently won the MidCanterbury title. He did not look at ease on the hard courts in the morning but once the change was made to the grass he was in his element, with his forceful serving, volleying and smashing. He beat M. Agar with the loss of only two games. The other top man to win a singles for a country team was W. G. Lewthwaite, of Banks Peninsula. He beat a former United club-mate, J. Griffiths, 9-4, with his soundness and consiistency. Retained Her Skill Top for Hurunui, Mrs S. Dalzell, once a leading provincial woman, showed that she also has lost little of her skill when she beat the promising junior, Miss R. Dillon, 9-8, after being down, 1-6. It was a determined recovery. Miss Dillon tried to wear down her opponent by alternating her length but Mrs Dalzell was still getting to them. Mrs N. Skilling, of Ellesmere, also scored for country when she beat Mrs B. Leopold, 9-6. Results: — ' TOWN v. NORTH CANTERBURY Men’s Singles L. W. Watkins beat L. Elliott, 9-3; Crofts beat J.
