Bernstein Musical
Fifty years of film making are represented in the selections for the Little Film Society’s thirteenth year. The first screening at the Museum Theatre tomorrow will feature “On The Town,” directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, with music by Leonard Bernstein, which in 1950 marked a novel and charming approach to film musicals. Showing with "On The Town” is “University of Canterbury,” a 30-minute National Film Unit production in colour, showing the role of the university in the city’s life and plans for its development. Later films include: April, “M,” (Germany, 1932), Fritz Lang’s first sound film, starring Peter Lorre as the pathological kill! er.
May, D. W. Griffith’s monumental! "Birth of a Nation” (U.S.A., 1915). June, "Time in the Sun" (U.S.A.P.S.S.R.), 1940), Eisenstein's last film, made in Mexico. July, “The Great Laughter Makers,” a selection of classic screen comedy, including “The General,’ ’directed by and starring Buster Keaton, and others with Chapin, Laurel and Hardy, Chester Conklin and the Keystone Cops, Larry Semen. August, Renoir’s ‘The Vanish img Corporal" (France, 1961). September. To Be Or Not To Be” (U.S.A., 1942), one of the famous Lubttsch comedies starring Carole Lombard (her last film)), and Jack Benny. October, Bisenistein’s The Battelsh'ip PotemMn” (U.S.S.R., 1925). November, The World of Apu” (India, 1958), the final part of Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed Bengal trilogy which began with Panther Panichalii” and “Aparajito.”
