Former Whale Chaser Calls At Lyttelton
A small vessel which spent the week-end in Lyttelton for repairs has an interesting history. She is the wooden-hulled 112-ton motor vessel Tuatea, which has been fishing out of Otago since July. Captain R. Gower, her master, said yesterday that rough weather off Banks Peninsula had caused minor damage to the trawing doors (fins). The Tuatea spent many years as Perona’s whale chaser at Picton. She has 50 tons of freezer space. Built by C. Bailey Jnr., of Auckland, in 1905, the Tuatea was originally a steam vessel owned by the Union Steam Ship Company and based at Gisborne as a tender for carrying passengers to and from vessels in the roadstead.
She is now owned by Otakou Fisheries, Ltd. The Tuatea has a modern echo sounder and is equipped with radiotelephone. For a 60-year-old vessel she is in remarkable condition.
