COUNT-BACK TO DECIDE GOLF

(from Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. Canterbury won the South Island interprovincial golf championship at Westport on Sunday but only after surviving a count-back on games with Otago. Canterbury and Otago each had three wins.

Mid-South Canterbury won two matches and Buller-West-land-Marlborough-Nelson, and Southland, one each. Two young members of the Canterbury team, J. F. Logie and J. R. Broadhurst, with four and three wins respectively, contributed considerably to their team’s success. R. K. Aitkinson, runner-up in the New Zealand amateur championship last year, also played well to get three wins and a half. E. H. M. Richards also showed good form to win three matches. Surprising Defeat Canterbury’s only loss was a rather surprising one, at the hands of Mid-South Canterbury, but it scored decisive wins over Southland and Otago, and, to a lesser extent, the combined team. The New Zealand representative, R. C. Murray, was the only number one player to go through unbeaten but

he could only halve his game with A. C. Browne (Mid-South Canterbury). In the last round, Murray was in devastating form to beat G. Lummis, of Nelson, 5 and 4. T. P. Pfahlert, the former West Coast champion, and captain of the Mid-South Canterbury team, won two and halved two, but J. M. Lister was the outstanding member of that team. He won three games and squared the other. A. J. Palmer (Otago), playing in his first major teams tournament, was another to win four games. The tournament was played in good conditions on the Kawatiri course and large galleries followed the leading players. The best round recorded — some rounds were unfinished : when the winner was obvious—was a 67 by the Mid-South Canterbury player. J. M. Richards.
