Confident In Comalco
•New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 7. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today he felt confident the Commonwealth Aluminium Corporation would go ahead with its plans for establishing a multi-million pound aluminium smelter at Bluff.
The smelter will use power from the £l6 million Manapouri hydro-electric scheme. Mr Holyoake told a press conference the Manapouri power scheme was begun with the express intention of providing power for the proposed smelter. Comalco has until 1968 to take up options on Manapouri power and earlier this
month the general-manager of Comalco, Mr E. A. Holbrook, said in Wellington the price of power from Manpoun would be a major factor in his firm’s decision. Mr Holbrook said Comalco was still “very keen” on building the smelter and added: “I think we’U live within our commitment to the Government.” Asked today what would happen if Comalco did not take up its options, the Prime Minister said Manapouri power would be poured into the national grid. He said he knew of no other plans for the establishment of other industries based on the use of Manapouri power.
