Rome Envoy Goes To Budapest

(.N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) BUDAPEST, March 7. A Vatican envoy arrived in Budapest today—apparently to sound out whether Josef Cardinal Mindszenty intends to keep up his 10-year refuge in the U.S. Legation in Budapest.

| The Cardinal was granted political asylum in the legation in November, 1956. when Soviet troops crushed the Hungarian uprising. He had been sentenced by Hungarian Communist authorities to life imprisonment for high treason and espionage in 1949 but released on house arrest in 1955. Budapest sources said the Vatican envoy, Franz Cardinal Koenig, Archbishop of Vienna, would ask Cardinal Mindszenty his views about his future plans. The sources added that the Cardinal, who was 74 on March 29, considered himself a martyr and had rejected moves to free him and get him to Rome. Concessions he demands from the Hungarian Government include a

guarantee of church freedom. Hungary is said to have agreed in principle to let the

primate go to Rome, provided he and the Vatican promise not to interfere in Hungarian affairs.
