Prices In 1851
Sir,:—Several weeks ago I had handed on to me a supplement of the “Lyttelton Times” dated 1851. The prices of articles interested me very much. I wondered if you would be interested in printing them just to let people see how cheap things were in those days. “Lyttelton market, retail prices, January 11, 1851: first grade flour, 25s per cwt.; bread. 7d 21b loaf; beef, 5d per lb: mutton, 5d per lb, pork, 5d per lb: fowls, per pair. 3s; ducks, per pair, 4s; fresh butter, Is 6d per lb; salt butter. Is 3d per lb; potatoes, 5s a ton; eggs. 2s dozen: New Zealand cheese, Is 4d per lb; maize, 5s 6d per bushel; ale, 2s 8d per gallon; ham and bacon, 7d per lb: firewood, per cord, Is; sawn timber, 16s to 18s per 100 feet.—Yours, etc.; ALBERTA JOHNSON (Mrs).
