To Feed The Hungry
Sir, —Some time ago I read that a proportion of the fishermen’s catch at Lyttelton is invariably thrown back into the sea because of its being damaged or otherwise below the standards of New Zealand markets. Could not these rejected fish be shipped overseas to help to feed the hungry? There must be many people who would subscribe to a fund to buy ice, salt, and old barrels, all that would be needed. The writer, for one. would undertake to meet the fishing fleet at Lyttelton regularly, whenever a catch was due and pack the discarded fish into the barrels there and then on the wharf, to be put aboard any and every ship bound for the East. This would be a very small drop in the ocean, of course, but after all, “big oaks from little acorns grow.” There might be rejects from other food industries too.—Yours, etc., LET US GO GATHERING ACORNS. March 7, 1966.
