SEA-GOING AUTHOR

The master of a freighter has published 13 science fiction novels and contributed many articles and short stories to Australian, American and British magazines. He is Captain A. B. Chandler, of the Union Steam Ship Company’s freighter. Karamu, which last week discharged cargo from Melbourne. Captain Chandler’s novels have been published in English, French. German, Swedish, Italian, Spanish, Japanese. Polish and Russian. Three of his short stories have been published in Penguin anthologies. He manages to write about two novels a year, doing most of his work while at home in Sydney on leave. Science fiction writing was satisfying and fairly remunerative, particularly on the American market, he said. Born 53 years ago at Aidershot, England, Captain Chandler began his seafaring carer in 1928 as an apprentice in a British tramp. In 1932 he began to write articles and some light verse. In 1937, he joined the Shaw Savill Line. He continued writing science fiction and some articles for pulp magazines in New York. He was made chief officer of the Cufic in 1949 and resigned from the company when chief

officer of the Waiwera in 1956. He joined the Union Steam Ship Company in Australia the same year. The years since 1963 had

been his peak period in novel writing, he said. But now he had his ship to look after and I writing was temporarily in I abeyance. I
