Ram To Be Flown To U.S.

This stud Corriedale rani, Bushey Park 1102/63, left Christchurch on Saturday on its way to Wyoming. It is being flown to America in a special light-weight container.

The ram has been sold by Bushey Park Estate, Palmerston, to Mr Art King, a leading Corriedale breeder in the United States. Mr King selected the sheep himself when he visited New Zealand after the Fourth World Corriedale Sheep Conference held in Melbourne last August. The price has not been disclosed but is described as “substantial.” The Otago ram will arrive in Honolulu within 12 hours of leaving Auckland by air tomorrow. It will remain in quarantine there for 30 days. Interesting Consignment “This is a very interesting consignment for two reasons,” Mr H. D. Matson, stud stock manager for the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd., said on Friday. “In the first place it is the first stud Corriedale ram to be exported to the United States for eight years and in the second place ft is being sent

to the United States in one of Air New Zealand’s new DCBs in a special lightweight cardboard container. “These new packs, specially designed for air transport, offer an opening to untapped markets in the East and in ;

the Americas. Air New Zealaid, in line with its policy of encouraging export trade, has approved the pack for air carriage. This, together with a specially-negotiated commodity freight rate, will allow the ram to be flown to

the United States cheaper than if it went by sea.” Mr Matson said that the cost of flying the ram from Auckland to San Francisco would be £B9. “This type of container, weighing from 201 b to 401 b according to the size required, has been thoroughly tested with a sheep in it for 62 hours, with the animal suffering no ill effects,” he said. “It would therefore be possible to use these packs for flying sheep to anywhere in the world.” The container in which the ram will travel to America is seen in the photograph above. Behind the ram is Mr D. G. Cassells, the manager of Bushey Park Estate, and on the right is Mr Matson.
