Trees Around Lake Taupo Proposed
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 6. The Taupo County Council wants to ring Lake Taupo with forest reserves to preserve the “priceless asset of Taupo’s crystal clear water.”
In a brochure the council proposes planting 50,000 acres of trees along the lake’s 120mile shoreline, on tribuntary streams and in the catchment area. “At present, one of Lake Taupo’s most priceless assets is its crystal-clear water,” says the council, “in view of what has happened almost imperceptibly over the years at Rotorua, every branch of the Government, local government, every private landowner and citizen has a responsibility to protect Lake Taupo and maintain its high quality.” The council warns that already the lake’s shorelines and stream beds have begun to deteriorate and that huge areas of natural cover have 1
been stripped from the lake’s ; catchment. “These reserves will help filter out the nutrients and poisons (from urban settlements and farm fertilisers), provided they are continued up the banks of the rivers and streams,” says the council. “At the same time they will add immeasurably to the : beauty and usefulness of the : area.” According to the council, ■ forest experts have said that ■ the land around the lake will, j over a given period, produce greater returns from trees than grass. Clean Sweep.—Five hub i caps were stolen from a car i parked in Collingwood street, ! Christchurch, on Thursday.
