Opposition Sympathy
“To avoid involving unnecessary financial hardship 1 strongly urge the authorities to interpret the provisions of the Earthquake and Damage Act as liberally and generously as possible," said the leader of the Opposition (Mr N. E. Kirk) in a telegram sent to the Mayor of Gisborne (Mr H. Barber) today. “I have been most concerned to learn of the widespread damage caused in Gisborne and surrounding districts by yesterday’s and today’s earthquakes and understand the great anxiety and worry it brings to you all,” said Mr Kirk. “In this hour of adversity may I offer you and the people of Gisborne my sincere sympathy and assure you of our readiness to do whatever possible to help. From reports it appears that the homes and properties of many people have suffered severe damage. “I have asked the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr H. Watt) to make a personal inspection of the affected areas and he has arranged to leave Auckland for Gisborne by the first available aircraft tomorrow morning,” Mr Kirk said.
