Same Jockeys Won Double Last Year

On Saturday D. N. Hadfield and J. A. Alessent were associated with the winners of the T.A.B. double at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s summer meeting for the second vear in succession.

Twelve months ago Messent rode Cobble to victory in the Peninsula Handicap and Rae’s Hope, which won the Kinloch Handicap, was one of Hadfield’s three winning rides on the day. On Saturday Messent and Hadfield rode two winners apiece—including the successfid combination for the T.A.B. double. But this time Hadfield won the first leg on Early Dawn and Messent the second, on Early Dawn’s stablemate Sabell. Hadfield’s other successful mount on Saturday was Messmaid. which beat the middledistance hacks hands down in the Parkinson Handicap. She paid £l5 5s for a win—the second-best price* of the day. The other winner at good odds was Coral Prince, the 8/9 favourite of 12 in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap, second leg of the double for course patrons pnly. Coral Prince rounded off a

double, worth £143 19s 6d for £l, with Kalimera, which made a successful fresh start for the season in the Wairewa Stakes for which she was the third favourite of 12. Only two win favourites were successful during the day. One was Sabell and the other Port Bank—also ridden by Messent—which beat the maiden milers in the Waihora Stakes. The hot favourite Talic missed first by a neck to the Washdyke-trained Llanston in the Bradley Handicap. Talic came with a determined late run after being one of the last away from the stalls. The Otahuna High-weight went to First Time to give Riccarton stables seven wins for the day. The meeting was held in fine weather with the track in good order but times were not fast. The attendance was fair.
