Amuri Jubilee Show Held In Fine Weather

Fine warm weather, with only a light breeze, prevailed for the jubilee show of the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which was held in the show grounds at Rotheram on Saturday. The day was partly overcast during the latter part of the afternoon.

Gate takings were £l2B compared with £9l 7s 9d last year and £92 18s 3d in 1964. The record entries were well up on last year, 4054 compared with 2665. Sheep entries were 925 compared with 452, cattle 20 compared with none, and horses 571 compared with 484. Dog trial entries were 30 compared with none last year. The sheep and horse sections provided the show's main interest for many visitors. There were the usual substantial entries in the fruit, vegetables, produce and handcrafts sections; and there was a record number of 946 entries in the schoolwork section.

Schools represented in this section were Hanmer Springs, Rotherham, Culverden and Waiau. The standard of work was judged to be exceptionally high. The day’s competitions included a baby show, which was held in the afternoon shortly after the grand parade. Before the grand parade a parade of old machinery and vintage cars was held, and some of the exhibitors from the first show 50 years ago also passed in parade on horse-drawn vehicles. Credit To Breeders

The judges of most sections were pleased with both the number and the quality of the entries. Mr D. Cassels, one of the Corriedale judges, said the numbers were a credit to the breeders in the district, and in quality the entry was a wonderful exhibition of the breed.

The judge of the Young Farmers’ Club section, Mr G B. Evans, said entry and quality was good, while the judge of the Romney Marsh ewes, Mr M. McLaren, said the classes were generally pleasing for a one-day show, and the top sheep were very good.

The president of the association ..(Mr C. Burrows) remarked it was the first time for several years that the show had included an entry of cattle. It had proved an outstanding success, he said.

Most of the Aberdeen Angus led calves were considered to be up to the standard of any metropolitan show. The Hereford judge (Mr N. Godsiff, of Blenheim) said that in the class for bulls of any age the first and second plaeihgs, Heathstock Downs, Ltd.’s Navigator Gem, and J. F. G. Blakely and Company’s Waihuka Kavaka 2nd, were extremely close, and both were very good bulls.

Navigator Gem was champion of its class, champion Hereford champion beef breeds, while the secondplaced bull was reserve champion in its class.

Speaking of the class for bulls of any age, Mr Godsiff said: “You could travel the length of the country to find the equal of the first two bulls.” Outstanding Calf The Aberdeen Angus champion of the breed, Mrs N. Collis’s unnamed entry, was said to be a calf with outstanding prospects. Overall the judges of the cattle classes seemed favourably impressed. Mr A. Southay, a Romney Marsh judge, said the prizewinning sheep were all good animals, the number of entries was good. Mr D. E. Lewis, judge of the South Suffolk and Poll Dorset sections, remarked the numbers in the classes were disappointing, but the quality was quite good. The special award presented by Mrs C. Burrows for the champion of the baby show was won by Michael Flintoff, winner of the under 18 months’ class. The under six months’ class went to Andrew Marshal], the under 12 months to Donna Georgeson. Championships Results of championship events were: Horses and Ponies.—Hack: lan Bell’s Ramero. Reserve: R.
