Two More N.Z. Records By Miss Shipston

Responding to the challenge made by the national selectors at Napier the previous week, Tui Shipston smashed both the New Zealand women’s and girls’ records for 220 yd medley during the Spreydon Swimming Club’s carnival in the Centennial Pool on Saturday night.

The 14-year-old Elmwood club girl improved her own national junior mark by o.9sec and snipped 0.3 from the senior figure established by Miss M. M. Macrae (Auckland) at the national championships. The swim improved Miss Shipston’s chances of gaining positive nomination for the Empire Games team; it was the fourth occasion in just over five weeks that she has i beaten the target time for the 1220 yd medley. I She is one of six competij tors named by the selectors as a possible nomination for the Games team. Provincial Best Another fine young swimmer. 11-year-old Catherine Whiting (Spreydon), added further lustre to the proI gramme by chopping 2 6sec from her own provincial under-12 record for girls’ 110yard backstroke. Some competitors in the junior (under 16) section at the national meeting did not achieve her time of Imin 23.45ec. I After these two splendid jefforts, the carnival assumed a more relaxed air. The varied ’bill of fare included a number of aquatic novelty events and a spectacular fire dive, in which two performers plunged from the 19-metre tower through 12ft high flames—and emerged unscathed. Two former Canterbury champions who displayed hitherto unsuspected talents were P. Jonaa. vinnar at tha ribbon

diive, and A. McDonald, who outlasted seven other contestants in the watery equivalent of musiical chairs. Relay Victories . With five swimmers who bad represented Canterbury at Napoer the previous week, Wharenui had little difficulty in winning the two important relay events, for the Bryce and Harris Cups. The club also made off with the flying squadron event, in which batons were carried. Mils® A. McMillian swam a particularly fast leg through her unorthodox but effective method of carrying the baton. Some fast times were recorded in handicap events. Miss McMillan did Imin B.2sec for 110 yards freestyle and D. M. Hindie and L. Furness both finished in ; Imin 3.2 sec in the men’s race over this distance. ■ W. P. Brown and J. Edmonds both broke Imin 20sec for the 110 yards breaststroke. Brown being the faster by a yard, and N. Williams produced his fastest time for the 220 yards medley, 2m in 40.6 sec. Abbreviations used In the results are: S., Spreydon: C.. Christchurch: W..
