CLARKE IS CLEARED
Advert. On Singlet (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) MELBOURNE. The executive of the VUctorlan Amateur Athletic Association on Saturday cleared the world record-holder, Ron Cilarke, and another Melbourne runner, John Coyle, of infringing their amateur status by wearing singlets carrying an advertisement at an athletics meeting on Thursday night The meeting was sponsored by a breakfast cereal company, and each athlete had the name of a cereal product above the number on his singlet. The Victoria A.A.A. secretary, Mr A. E. Robinson, told the executive that the secretary of the Australian Amateur Athletic Union, Mr A. Hodsden, had suggested that Clarke and Coyle, whose pictures wearing the singlets appeared in a newspaper, should be suspended immediately. Mr Robinson, in a statement after the executive meeting, said the executive decided to take no action in the matter and that Clarke and Coyle should not be suspended.
