Health Department Called Failure

(Hew Zealand Pre>» Annociation) WELLINGTON, March 6. The New Zealand Medical Association today urged the establishment of an independent advisory body to review the efficiency of various sectors of New Zealand's health sen-ices.

The body envisaged by the N.Z.M.A. would publish its findings in periodic reports to the Government and to the public, and make recommendations for further developments. The N.Z.JI.A. said the establishment of an advisory body was its most important submission to the political parties and one which would appeal to every’ sensible person. “It accords with democratic tradition, with medical usage and with common sense.”

I The N.Z.M.A. said the I Health Department had failed . because its medical advisory bodies lacked co-ordination and independence and were not subject to public scrutiny. The most objective advice on New Zealand's medical services could come only from a council which worked independently and owed allegiance to facts only, said the N.Z.M A.

Until an independent national medical advisory council is established the N.Z.M.A. has decided to set up its own council.
