NEWS MEDIA ACT

Labour Party’s Intention The next Labour Government would repeal the News Media Ownership Act, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) in Christchurch last evening. He was commenting on a statement made by Mr H. N. Blundell, who, at the annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, had said that it was unfortunate that the bill had become the subject of party politics. “One can imagine that, had Labour been in office Labour might have supported the bill and the National Party could have opposed it” Mr Blundell said. “Even if he was not joking it is hard to believe that Mr Blundell was serious in his suggestion,” said Mr Kirk. “He need be under no illusion that we were not opposed as strongly as we could be to what we regarded as a most obnoxious piece of legislation. The News Media Act is bad in principle and in detail. “It is bad in principle because it owes its existence to the fear that because something might happen it will happen. This cuts across the concept of British justice which holds that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”
