E.L.D.O. PLANS
Warning On U.K. Move (N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, March 6. Europe was warned yesterday its space telecommunications would be entirely in United States hands if Britain pulled out of the joint European space satellite venture. Members of the council of Europe’s Scientific Commission meeting in Paris to discuss a progress report on the venture, emphasised Europe must have its own space telecommunications system for military as well as political and commercial reasons. One official warned if the British withdrew, “Europe will be put totally in the hands of the United States.” The European space programme aims at having a European satellite launcher ready by 1968. Britain’s Blue Streak is planned as the first stage of the launcher rocket. A test launching is due at Woomera next month, but Britain has announced it is reconsidering the project because of delays and spiralling costs.
