MEDICAL APPLIANCE
REASONS: Families are buying saunas for a wide variety of reasons—housewives to control their weight; models to improve complexions, footballers and athletes to tone up muscles; jockeys to lose weight; and businessmen to throw off the lethargy of a “day at the office.” But: The great majority of home sauna enthusiasts have bought them as a medical appliance —for the blessed relief from the nagging, jabbing pains of rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, lumbago, gout and similar complaints which have come to be regarded as a necessary evil of advancing years. Asthma sufferers have also provided glowing testimony of the benefits derived from using the sauna. It is a remarkable fact that not one of the many thousands of New Zealanders using this appliance has claimed that no benefit has resulted. On the other hand, very few of the satisfied users are willing to allow their names to be published. We can, however, quote a few exceptions.
